| Who keeps trial records | Clerk of the Wyoming Supreme Court; Clerk of the Chancery Court |
Wyoming keeps trial-court files with the clerk of the court that heard the case, in the county where it was filed. The Clerk of District Court holds felony criminal, civil, family, juvenile, probate, and adoption records for the district court, and the Circuit Court Clerk holds misdemeanor, small-civil, eviction, and protection-order records for the circuit court in the same county. Wyoming has no separate "county clerk" court office the way some states do — that title belongs to a different elected office that handles recording and elections, not case files.
Wyoming does not have a public statewide case search for district and circuit courts. The Judicial Branch's eFiling system (efiling.courts.state.wy.us) lets attorneys of record view their own filings, and a free public-access terminal is available at every courthouse and at the Wyoming State Law Library, but there is no name-search website the public can use from home for trial-court cases. The only public online case search is for the Wyoming Supreme Court, at the same eFiling domain. A 2019 legislative interim committee studied statewide remote access and concluded it was still years away; as of this writing it has not been built.
The most common mistake is assuming a Wyoming county has an online docket like many other states. It usually does not. Expect to call or visit the clerk's office, or use the courthouse terminal, for anything beyond the case types covered by the DCI fingerprint-based criminal history check described below.

Request records in person or by mail
In person. Go to the clerk of the court that heard the case: the Clerk of District Court for felonies, family, probate, and larger civil cases, or the Circuit Court Clerk for misdemeanors and small-civil matters. Every county courthouse also has a free public-access terminal where you can search the case index without asking the clerk directly; the Wyoming State Law Library in Cheyenne has one too. Bring the case number if you have it, or the party names and an approximate filing year.
By mail or email. Most clerks accept written requests by mail, fax, or email. Include the case number or party names and year, exactly which documents you need, whether you need plain or certified copies, and a check or money order (or ask for a fee quote first). A self-addressed stamped envelope speeds up mailed responses.
Online. There is no statewide public case-search website for district or circuit courts, so most requests cannot be completed online. Attorneys of record can view their own case filings through the Judicial Branch's eFiling system. The Supreme Court's opinions and appellate case search are the exception and are free to use from home.
Records older than the current index. Older paper and microfilm files may be stored off-site or transferred to the Wyoming State Archives; the clerk can tell you whether a file has been transferred and how to request it from the Archives.
Fees
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Plain copy | District Court: $1 first page and $0.50 each additional page under W.S. 5-3-206(a)(vi) |
| Certified copy | District Court: $0.50 for each certificate and seal, plus copying, under W.S. 5-3-206(a)(v) |
The Wyoming Legislature's current Title 5 text confirms these District Court amounts in W.S. 5-3-206(a)(v)-(vi). The section addresses civil matters; confirm charges for other records, electronic delivery, research, postage, and exemplification with the clerk. Circuit and municipal courts have separate schedules, so do not apply these amounts to every Wyoming court.

Sealed, expunged, and restricted records
Wyoming court records are open to the public under the Wyoming Public Records Act (W.S. 16-4-201 et seq.) and the Wyoming Rules Governing Access to Case Records, but several categories are restricted or removed from public view:
- Expunged arrest and case records. Under W.S. 7-13-1401 through 1404, a person may petition to expunge an arrest or case record if at least 180 days have passed and there was no conviction (no charges filed, charges dismissed, or acquittal). An expunged record is removed from the DCI central repository's public dissemination and from public case-record access.
- Expunged misdemeanor convictions. W.S. 7-13-1501 allows expungement of certain misdemeanor convictions after a waiting period, subject to exceptions and a filing fee.
- Juvenile records. Juvenile court proceedings are confidential with narrow statutory exceptions.
- Adoption records. Adoption case files are sealed.
- Protection-order and sensitive family-case data. Circuit and district courts restrict access to certain protection-order records and require redaction of Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and minors' names under the case-records access rules.
The Rules Governing Access to Case Records set an access-level matrix that classifies documents as fully public, restricted to parties and their attorneys, or confidential; the clerk applies that matrix when a record is requested, so what shows on a courthouse terminal is not always identical to the full file.
To remove your own record from public view, read how to expunge or seal a criminal record.
Frequently asked questions
Are Wyoming court records public?
Yes. Wyoming court records are presumed open under the Wyoming Public Records Act and the Rules Governing Access to Case Records, unless a statute, court order, or the rules' access-level matrix restricts a specific record, such as juvenile cases, adoptions, and expunged arrests.
Is there a free statewide search for Wyoming court records?
No. Wyoming has no public statewide case-search website for district or circuit courts. Free public-access terminals at every courthouse and the Wyoming State Law Library let you search in person. Only the Supreme Court's appellate opinions and case search are searchable online from home.
How do I find out if someone has a criminal record in Wyoming?
Wyoming's only statewide criminal history check is fingerprint-based, run by the Division of Criminal Investigation. There is no online name-search database. You schedule fingerprinting, pay a $15 fee, and results are mailed or released to the requesting agency.
Which clerk has my divorce record in Wyoming?
The Clerk of District Court in the county where the divorce was filed. Family cases, including divorce and custody, are heard in district court, not circuit court.
How do I get a certified copy of a Wyoming court record?
Contact the clerk of the court that heard the case, in person, by mail, or by email, and ask for a certified copy. The district-clerk statute lists $1 for a first copy page, $0.50 per additional page, and $0.50 for a certificate and seal in civil matters. Confirm the total and any different charges for the court, case type, research, or delivery method before paying.
What is the difference between Wyoming's district court and circuit court?
District court handles felonies, larger civil cases, family law, juvenile, and probate matters. Circuit court handles misdemeanors, civil cases up to $50,000 (including small claims), evictions, and certain protection orders. Both exist in every county and have separate clerks.
