Denver is Colorado's only consolidated city-county, and its court records are split between two entirely separate systems. Denver District Court, part of the 2nd Judicial District and the state Judicial Branch, hears felonies, civil cases of any amount, divorce and custody, probate, and juvenile matters. Its clerk's office is split across two buildings: civil and domestic cases at the City and County Building, criminal cases at the Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse.

Denver County Court is a different court entirely, run by the City and County of Denver rather than the state. It handles Denver municipal ordinance violations, traffic tickets, state misdemeanors filed in Denver, and civil claims and small claims up to $25,000. It has its own website and its own free case-number lookup, separate from the state's docket search and from CoCourts.

The common mistake is searching only one system. The state's statewide docket search and CoCourts cover Denver District Court but not Denver County Court; for a traffic ticket or a misdemeanor filed in county court, search denvercountycourt.org directly.

What is available online

Denver District Court cases appear in the statewide docket search and in CoCourts like other district courts. Denver County Court is not part of either system; use its own public portal to search by case number, pay fines, or view livestreamed proceedings. Neither system provides copies of filed documents online — those must be requested from the relevant clerk.

Which clerk has your record

In Colorado, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Colorado page.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there two different Denver courts?

Denver is a consolidated city-county. Denver District Court is a state trial court in the 2nd Judicial District that hears felonies and civil, family, and probate cases. Denver County Court is a separate city court for misdemeanors, traffic, municipal violations, and smaller civil claims.

Where do I look up a Denver traffic ticket?

On the Denver County Court public portal by case number. Denver County Court is not part of the statewide docket search or CoCourts, so those tools will not show traffic tickets.

Which office has my Denver divorce case?

Denver District Court, specifically the civil and domestic clerk's office at the City and County Building, 1437 Bannock St. Domestic relations cases are heard in district court, not county court.

Can I search Denver District Court cases in the statewide system?

Yes. Denver District Court is part of the state Judicial Branch, so its cases appear in the statewide docket search and in CoCourts, unlike Denver County Court.

How do I pay a Denver County Court fine or fee online?

Denver County Court's website offers online fine and fee payment through its public portal, separate from the state's court-payment system used by district and county courts elsewhere in Colorado.
