Maricopa County is Arizona's largest county and one of the largest court systems in the country. The Clerk of the Superior Court of Maricopa County keeps every Superior Court file — felonies, civil cases above the justice-court limit, family law, probate, and juvenile matters — filed at any of the county's Superior Court locations, including the Downtown Phoenix complex, Southeast Court in Mesa, Northwest Court in Surprise, and Northeast Court in Phoenix.

Misdemeanors, small claims, evictions, and traffic citations written by county deputies or constables go to one of the county's justice courts instead, each with its own precinct and clerk. Tickets and misdemeanors from city police (Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale, and other Maricopa County cities) go to that city's municipal court, which the county does not index at all.

The Clerk's Office publishes a free online case search alongside the statewide Arizona Public Access to Court Case Information portal, and separately maintains an online record of court minute entries.

This Judicial Branch records page, which is verified and links to that case-search tool, is used here instead; the case-search URL itself (https://www.clerkofcourt.maricopa.gov/i-want-to/find-a-case) is confirmed correct from official search results but could not be opened directly to check current page wording.

What is available online

The Clerk's Office online case search covers civil, criminal, family, and probate Superior Court cases, with separate case searches by case type. Document images are more complete for recent, electronically filed cases; older paper files may need to be requested in person or by mail. The statewide Public Access to Court Case Information portal also indexes Maricopa County Superior, Justice, and many Municipal court cases, but coverage and detail vary by court.

Which clerk has your record

In Arizona, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Arizona page.

Fees

ItemTypical cost in Arizona
Plain copy$0.50 per page
Certified copy$30.00 statutory certification fee per document, plus $0.50 per page; most county clerks post $35.00

A.R.S. § 12-284 sets the Superior Court clerk's base fees at $0.50 per page for copies (Class F) and $30.00 for a certificate of correctness or document certification (Class E), and states that copy fees are separate from certification fees. Counties add authorized surcharges, so posted county schedules commonly show $35.00 per certification and an $8.00 postage-and-handling charge (Mohave, Coconino, Yavapai, Apache); Navajo County posts $30.00. Justice courts use a separate limited-jurisdiction schedule (typically $0.50 per page and $33.00 per certification). Confirm the total with the specific clerk before sending payment.

Sealed and restricted records

Arizona court records are presumed open under Arizona Supreme Court Rule 123, which sets the general rule that records of the Judicial Department are available for public inspection unless a specific confidentiality interest outweighs that presumption. Several categories will not appear in a public search:

The Arizona guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.
