Cochise County, in Arizona's southeast corner along the Mexican border, keeps its Superior Court records with the Clerk of the Superior Court in the county seat of Bisbee, with a second office in Sierra Vista, the county's largest city. The clerk maintains civil, domestic relations, criminal, juvenile, and probate case files, issues marriage licenses, and accepts passport applications. Its research unit holds an unusually deep archive: the office says it can supply criminal records, marriage licenses, divorce and civil case files, probate and guardianship records, and certain naturalization records dating from February 1881 to the present.

For online lookups the county relies on the Arizona Judicial Branch's two statewide tools. The free Public Access to Court Case Information portal shows case histories, and the eAccess portal provides document images; the clerk's copies page notes that case documents are available through eAccess for a one-time fee of $10. Copies and certified copies from the clerk itself are ordered through an online request form, in person, or by mail, and the office does not accept requests by telephone or fax.

Cochise County has six justice courts — Bisbee, Douglas, Benson, Willcox, Bowie, and Sierra Vista — that handle misdemeanors, DUIs, evictions, small claims, and traffic. The county's court administration is explicit that requests for justice-court records must go to the justice court directly, not to the Superior Court clerk.

What is available online

Cochise County does not host its own case search. The clerk links to the Arizona Judicial Branch's Public Access to Court Case Information portal for free case histories and to eAccess for document images, noting that case documents are available through eAccess for a one-time fee of $10. The clerk's own research unit fills copy orders from an archive that reaches back to February 1881, so older divorces, probates, and criminal cases that never appear online can still be located on request. Justice-court case histories for participating precincts also appear in the statewide portal; the justice courts' written policy directs the public there before ordering a paid search.

Which clerk has your record

In Arizona, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Arizona page.

Fees

ItemTypical cost in Arizona
Plain copy$0.50 per page
Certified copy$30.00 statutory certification fee per document, plus $0.50 per page; most county clerks post $35.00

A.R.S. § 12-284 sets the Superior Court clerk's base fees at $0.50 per page for copies (Class F) and $30.00 for a certificate of correctness or document certification (Class E), and states that copy fees are separate from certification fees. Counties add authorized surcharges, so posted county schedules commonly show $35.00 per certification and an $8.00 postage-and-handling charge (Mohave, Coconino, Yavapai, Apache); Navajo County posts $30.00. Justice courts use a separate limited-jurisdiction schedule (typically $0.50 per page and $33.00 per certification). Confirm the total with the specific clerk before sending payment.

Sealed and restricted records

Arizona court records are presumed open under Arizona Supreme Court Rule 123, which sets the general rule that records of the Judicial Department are available for public inspection unless a specific confidentiality interest outweighs that presumption. Several categories will not appear in a public search:

The Arizona guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.

Frequently asked questions

How far back do Cochise County Superior Court records go?

The clerk's research unit says it can supply criminal, marriage, divorce, civil, probate, guardianship, and certain naturalization records from February 1881 to the present, although older files must be located by staff rather than viewed online.

Can I request Cochise County court records over the phone?

No. The Superior Court clerk does not accept records requests by telephone or fax, and the justice courts' written policy also refuses telephone requests. Use the online form, visit in person, or mail the request form.

What payment does the Cochise County clerk accept for copies?

Cashier's checks, money orders, or online payment through Point & Pay once the research unit has quoted the cost. Personal checks are not accepted.
