Apache County runs the full length of Arizona's eastern border with New Mexico, and most of its land and population lie within the Navajo Nation. Its Superior Court sits in the small county seat of St. Johns, where the Clerk of the Superior Court keeps court records and collects fees, fines, bonds, and restitution. The clerk's office is the starting point for child support, civil, criminal, probate, guardianship and conservatorship, mental health, tax, and domestic relations matters, and it also handles the juvenile court's adoption, dependency, severance, and delinquency filings.

The county's clerk page is unusually direct about what is and is not free. Searching court records online or in person at the courthouse costs nothing, and the office states that Apache County Superior Court cases filed since 1995 can be searched at no charge through the Arizona Judicial Branch's Public Access to Court Case Information site. Research performed by clerk staff, copies, certification, and mailing each carry a set fee, and everyone who wants staff to pull or search a file must submit the Request for Access to Court Records form.

Misdemeanors, DUIs, civil traffic, small claims, evictions, and protective orders are handled by Apache County's justice courts — the county lists St. Johns, Round Valley, Chinle, and Puerco-Sanders — each of which keeps its own records separately from the Superior Court clerk.

What is available online

Apache County has no county-run case search. The clerk states that Superior Court cases filed since 1995 are searchable at no charge through the Arizona Judicial Branch's Public Access to Court Case Information site, which returns case numbers, party names, filing dates, and case events but generally not document images. Cases from before 1995 are on paper at the courthouse in St. Johns and require a visit or a written request. The clerk asks that you call ahead with the case number so the file can be pulled from storage before you arrive.

Which clerk has your record

In Arizona, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Arizona page.

Fees

ItemTypical cost in Arizona
Plain copy$0.50 per page
Certified copy$30.00 statutory certification fee per document, plus $0.50 per page; most county clerks post $35.00

A.R.S. § 12-284 sets the Superior Court clerk's base fees at $0.50 per page for copies (Class F) and $30.00 for a certificate of correctness or document certification (Class E), and states that copy fees are separate from certification fees. Counties add authorized surcharges, so posted county schedules commonly show $35.00 per certification and an $8.00 postage-and-handling charge (Mohave, Coconino, Yavapai, Apache); Navajo County posts $30.00. Justice courts use a separate limited-jurisdiction schedule (typically $0.50 per page and $33.00 per certification). Confirm the total with the specific clerk before sending payment.

Sealed and restricted records

Arizona court records are presumed open under Arizona Supreme Court Rule 123, which sets the general rule that records of the Judicial Department are available for public inspection unless a specific confidentiality interest outweighs that presumption. Several categories will not appear in a public search:

The Arizona guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.
