Tooele County sits in Utah's Third Judicial District alongside Salt Lake and Summit counties, but it has its own courthouse: the Tooele District Court in the Gordon R. Hall Courthouse on South 100 East in downtown Tooele. Felony criminal, civil, divorce and custody, and probate cases for the county are filed and heard there, and the Clerk of the Third District Court at that location keeps the files. Because the Third District is administered from Salt Lake City, some services such as jury administration are handled centrally, but case records stay with the courthouse that heard the case.
The same building houses the Tooele County Justice Court, a separate court with its own clerk that handles traffic citations, infractions, Class B and C misdemeanors, and small claims. Its office is in Suite 12 while the district court clerk is in Suite 14, so it is easy to walk into the wrong office; check the case number or citation first. Tooele City and Grantsville also run their own justice courts for citations written by city police.
As with the rest of Utah, there is no free public name search for Tooele County district-court cases. Case summaries are on Xchange, the state's paid subscription portal, and parties can use MyCase for their own files. Everything else runs through the clerk's counter or a written request.

What is available online
District-court case summaries for Tooele County are searchable through Xchange, the state's paid subscription tool, for public documents filed since the court adopted the state's electronic case system. Sealed, expunged, and juvenile cases are excluded. Tooele County Justice Court cases (traffic, infractions, misdemeanors, small claims) are also in Xchange, and the justice court offers online fine payment by case or citation number, but neither is a free public name search. District-court clerk hours were not posted on the pages we reviewed; the county justice court lists 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Which clerk has your record
In Utah, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Utah page.

Sealed and restricted records
Utah court records are presumed open under the Utah Rules of Judicial Administration, but several categories will not appear in Xchange, MyCase, or the appellate docket search:
The Utah guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.
Frequently asked questions
Which office keeps Tooele County's court records — the district clerk or the county clerk?
The Clerk of the Third District Court at the Tooele District Court (Gordon R. Hall Courthouse, Suite 14) keeps trial-court case files. The Tooele County Clerk/Auditor is a separate elected office for elections and county business, not court cases.
Is the Tooele County Justice Court the same as the district court?
No. They share the Gordon R. Hall Courthouse but are separate courts with separate clerks. The justice court (Suite 12) handles traffic, infractions, Class B and C misdemeanors, and small claims; the district court (Suite 14) handles felonies, larger civil cases, family law, and probate.
Is there a free public search for Tooele County court cases?
Not for a general name search of district-court cases; that requires a paid Xchange subscription. MyCase is free but limited to a party viewing their own case.
How do I get a certified copy of a Tooele County court record?
Request it from the Clerk of the Third District Court at the Tooele courthouse, in person or by mail. The statewide fee is $4.00 per document plus $0.50 per page; plain copies are $0.25 per page.
