Cache County is the largest county in Utah's First Judicial District, which also covers Box Elder and Rich counties. Felony criminal, civil, divorce and custody, probate, and guardianship cases for the county are heard at the Logan District Court, and the Clerk of the First District Court at that courthouse keeps the case files. As everywhere in Utah, there is no separate county clerk for court records: the elected Cache County Clerk/Auditor handles elections, marriage licenses, and county business, not court cases.

Lower-level matters are split among several justice courts rather than one countywide court. Logan City runs its own Logan City Municipal Justice Court for Class B and C misdemeanors, infractions, and small claims arising inside city limits, and the county's own page lists additional justice courts in Hyrum, Providence, Wellsville, North Logan, Hyde Park, and Smithfield. A traffic ticket written by Logan police therefore goes to a different court, with a different clerk, than one written by the sheriff's office or a small-town police department.

There is no free public name search for Cache County district-court cases. Case summaries are available through Xchange, the state's paid subscription portal, and parties to a case can use the free MyCase service to view their own file. For anything else, plan on contacting the Logan District Court clerk directly or visiting the courthouse's public terminals.

What is available online

District-court case summaries for Cache County are searchable through Xchange, the state's paid subscription tool, which covers public documents filed since the court moved to the state's electronic case system; older matters may exist only on paper or microfilm at the courthouse. Sealed, expunged, and juvenile cases are excluded. Justice-court citations and small claims handled by Logan City or the smaller municipal courts are separate dockets, each kept by that court's clerk, and they do not appear in the district court's index. Courthouse hours were not posted on the pages we reviewed, so call ahead before visiting.

Which clerk has your record

In Utah, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Utah page.

District-court records. Contact the Clerk of the First District Court at the Logan courthouse (135 North 100 West, Logan, UT 84321; (435) 750-1300). Bring or include the case number if you have it, or the party names and approximate filing year. Plain paper copies are $0.25 per page under Utah Code of Judicial Administration Rule 4-202.08; certified copies are $4.00 per document plus $0.50 per page under Utah Code § 78A-2-301. Faxed or emailed copies cost $5.00 for up to ten pages, and records available on Xchange will not be faxed or emailed.

By mail. Write to the Logan District Court clerk with the case number or party names, a list of the documents you need, whether they should be certified, a check or money order for the fee (or a request for a fee quote), and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Call first to confirm the current fee and turnaround.

Justice-court records. Identify which court issued the citation. Logan police tickets go to the Logan City Municipal Justice Court at 446 North 100 West; tickets from Hyrum, Providence, Wellsville, North Logan, Hyde Park, or Smithfield police go to that city's justice court. Sheriff's citations in unincorporated areas are handled by a county justice court; ask the clerk at the Logan District Court or the Cache County Sheriff's Office courts unit if you are unsure which court has the file.

Online. A paid Xchange subscription lets you search case summaries and purchase available documents for district- and justice-court cases without visiting the courthouse. MyCase is free but only shows a case to the parties on it.

The first 15 minutes of staff time are free; longer searches can carry a personnel charge.

Sealed and restricted records

Utah court records are presumed open under the Utah Rules of Judicial Administration, but several categories will not appear in Xchange, MyCase, or the appellate docket search:

The Utah guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.

Frequently asked questions

Which office keeps Cache County's court records — the district clerk or the county clerk?

The Clerk of the First District Court at the Logan courthouse keeps trial-court case files. The Cache County Clerk/Auditor is a separate elected office that handles elections, marriage licenses, and county business, not court cases.

Where does a Logan traffic ticket end up?

A citation written by Logan City police goes to the Logan City Municipal Justice Court at 446 North 100 West, not the district court. Tickets from other Cache Valley cities go to that city's own justice court, and sheriff's citations go to a county justice court.

Is there a free public search for Cache County court cases?

Not for a general name search of district-court cases; that requires a paid Xchange subscription. MyCase is free but limited to a party viewing their own case, and the courthouse has public terminals you can use in person.

How much does a copy of a Cache County court record cost?

Plain paper copies are $0.25 per page and certified copies are $4.00 per document plus $0.50 per page, the same statewide rates used by every Utah court of record. Faxed or emailed copies cost $5.00 for up to ten pages.
