Salt Lake County is in Utah's Third Judicial District, along with Summit and Tooele counties, and it is the only county in the district large enough to need two district courthouses. The Matheson Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City handles most felony, civil, family, and probate filings, while the West Jordan Courthouse on the county's west side hears a share of the district's caseload as well. Both are staffed by the Clerk of the Third District Court; there is no separate county clerk for court records.
Salt Lake County also has multiple Justice Courts. Salt Lake City runs its own justice court for citations and misdemeanors within city limits, and several other cities and the county itself operate additional justice courts, each with its own clerk and case index. There is no single county-run search that covers all of them — check which agency (city police, county sheriff, or a specific municipality) issued the citation before you search.
Case information for the district court is in Xchange, the state's paid subscription search; there is no free public name search for Salt Lake County district-court cases. Justice-court records are generally searched through each individual justice court, not through the district clerk.

What is available online
District-court case summaries for both Salt Lake County courthouses are searchable through Xchange, a paid statewide subscription tool; coverage of documents depends on when the court moved to the state's electronic case system, and sealed, expunged, and juvenile cases are excluded. Justice-court records are not part of Xchange coverage in the same way and are best checked directly with the specific justice court that handled the citation or misdemeanor.
Which clerk has your record
In Utah, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Utah page.
| Court | Typical cases | Records kept by |
|---|---|---|
| District Courts (8 judicial districts) | Felony criminal cases; Civil cases of any amount; Divorce, custody, and other family cases | Clerk of the District Court for that courthouse |
| Juvenile Courts (8 judicial districts) | Delinquency cases involving minors; Abuse, neglect, and dependency (child welfare) cases; Minor traffic and status offenses by juveniles | Clerk of the Juvenile Court for that district |
| Justice Courts | Class B and C misdemeanors; Small claims up to the statutory limit; Traffic citations and infractions | Justice Court Clerk for that city or county court |

Fees
| Item | Typical cost in Utah |
|---|---|
| Plain copy | $0.25 per page (paper copies) |
| Certified copy | $4.00 per document plus $0.50 per page (courts of record) |
The certified-copy fee is set in the statewide civil fee schedule at Utah Code § 78A-2-301 and the court's own fee page. The first 15 minutes of staff time are free; longer searches can carry a personnel charge.

Sealed and restricted records
Utah court records are presumed open under the Utah Rules of Judicial Administration, but several categories will not appear in Xchange, MyCase, or the appellate docket search:
The Utah guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free way to search Salt Lake County court cases online?
Not for a general public search of district-court cases — that requires an Xchange subscription. MyCase is free but limited to a party on their own case. Justice courts may offer their own limited search options; check with the specific court.
Which courthouse handles my Salt Lake County case?
Most felony, civil, family, and probate cases are filed at the Matheson Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City, with some Third District cases also heard at the West Jordan Courthouse. Contact the clerk at either location to confirm where a specific case was filed.
Where do I find a traffic ticket from Salt Lake City?
Salt Lake City tickets are handled by the Salt Lake City Justice Court, not the Third District Court. Tickets from other cities or the county sheriff go to that city's or the county's own justice court.
How do I get a certified copy of a Salt Lake County court record?
Request it from the Clerk of the Third District Court at the courthouse that heard the case, in person or by mail. The statewide fee is $4.00 per document plus $0.50 per page.
