Washoe County, like Clark County, has grown large enough that the Second Judicial District Court runs its own clerk's office rather than relying on the elected Washoe County Clerk. Following a dispute between the county clerk and the district court over control of court records, the district court now has its own Court Administrator and Clerk of Court, who keeps district-court felony, civil, family, and probate case records for Reno, Sparks, and the rest of the county.

The Washoe County Clerk's office still exists as a separate elected position, but it handles marriage licenses, notary bonds, and the minutes of the Board of County Commissioners — not court case files. If you are looking for a case record, go to the district court's own site (washoecourts.com) and its case search tool, not the county clerk's page.

Misdemeanors, evictions, small claims, and civil cases at or under $15,000 are split between the Reno Justice Court and the Sparks Justice Court depending on where the case was filed, and each runs its own case search. Traffic tickets and ordinance violations from city police go to the Reno Municipal Court or Sparks Municipal Court, neither of which is covered by the district or justice court portals.

What is available online

The Second Judicial District Court's Case & Calendar Inquiry tool shows filings, parties, docket entries, and hearing calendars for district-court cases; not every document image is available online, and older files may require a records request to the clerk. The Reno and Sparks Justice Courts each maintain their own separate case search and do not share a combined database with the district court or with each other.

Which clerk has your record

In Nevada, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Nevada page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Washoe County Clerk the same office as the district court clerk?

No. The Second Judicial District Court has its own Clerk of Court, separate from the elected Washoe County Clerk, who handles marriage licenses and county records rather than court case files.

How do I search Washoe County district court cases online?

Use the Case & Calendar Inquiry tool at caseinfo.washoecourts.com, which is free and does not require registration. It covers civil, criminal, family, and probate cases filed in district court.

Which court handles a misdemeanor in Reno versus Sparks?

It depends on where the case was filed. Reno Township cases go to the Reno Justice Court and Sparks Township cases go to the Sparks Justice Court; each keeps a separate docket and case search.

Where do I find a Washoe County divorce or custody case?

Family cases go to the Family Division of the Second Judicial District Court at One S Sierra St in Reno. Search the district court's case inquiry tool or contact the clerk of court directly.
