Stark County (Canton) is one of the more convenient Ohio counties to search because of CJIS, a shared Criminal Justice Information System built by the Stark County Clerk of Courts together with the county's three independent municipal courts (Canton, Massillon, and Alliance). A single search on CJIS can return cases from the Common Pleas Court and all three municipal courts at once, though each court keeps and is legally responsible for its own database.

Common Pleas computerized dockets begin January 1, 1985 for criminal, civil, domestic relations, and Fifth District Court of Appeals cases; earlier case indexes are on paper at the County Office Building in Canton. Probate is entirely separate: the Stark County Probate Court is not part of CJIS and runs its own case search, recently migrated to a new case management system in mid-2026 with a legacy search kept for older cases.

The main thing to watch for is which search — new or legacy — a Probate Court case falls under, since cases opened before July 27, 2026 are on the legacy system and newer cases are on the new one.

What is available online

CJIS merges data from the Common Pleas Court and the Canton, Massillon, and Alliance Municipal Courts into one guest-searchable site, though each court remains the official record custodian for its own cases. Common Pleas computerized records begin January 1, 1985; earlier indexes are on paper at the County Office Building, 110 Central Plaza South #690, Canton. The Probate Court is not part of CJIS and runs a separate, two-part search (new cases vs. legacy cases before July 27, 2026).

Which clerk has your record

In Ohio, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Ohio page.
