Knox County keeps every court record at one address: the county courthouse at 62 Union Street in Rockland. The Knox County Superior Court holds felony criminal, civil, and family cases; Rockland District Court, in the same building with the same clerk but a separate phone line, handles misdemeanors, small claims, protection orders, Family Division matters, and traffic infractions. On the first floor, the Knox County Registry of Probate — an elected county office, not a Judicial Branch court — keeps wills, estates, guardianships, adoptions, and name changes going back to 1860.
Knox is one of the last Maine counties to convert to the Judicial Branch's eCourts system. It belongs to eCourts Region 6 with Waldo, Lincoln, and Sagadahoc counties, which is scheduled to go live on December 7, 2026. Until then, Knox County Superior Court and Rockland District Court cases are not searchable through the free public re:SearchMaine portal, and the only way to check a case is to call or visit the clerk's office. After the conversion, newly filed cases will appear online; cases closed before that date are expected to remain paper files.
Probate works differently and is already partly online. The Registry of Probate directs the public to the statewide maineprobate.net search for docket lookups and e-filing, and holds the original files at the courthouse. Anything filed before 1860 would be in the Waldo or Lincoln County probate records, since Knox County was carved out of those counties.

What is available online
As of this writing, Knox County Superior Court and Rockland District Court cases are not searchable online. Knox County is in eCourts Region 6, scheduled to convert to Maine eCourts and the free public re:SearchMaine portal on December 7, 2026; until then, case information must be requested from the clerk by phone or in person. Once the conversion happens, the Registry of Actions for newly filed cases will be viewable after a free registration, but older closed cases are not expected to be loaded. Probate is a separate system that is already partly online: the Registry of Probate points the public to maineprobate.net for docket searches and e-filing, while original files and certified copies come from the office at 62 Union Street.
Which clerk has your record
In Maine, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Maine page.

Sealed and restricted records
Maine court records are generally open, but the Judicial Branch's Rules of Electronic Court Systems (MRECS) and Administrative Order JB-20-03 (Public Access and Confidentiality) draw a distinction between "public court information," "confidential" information restricted to parties or courthouse viewing, and records that are fully sealed or impounded by statute, rule, or court order. Maine's Freedom of Access Act does not apply to the judiciary — court records are governed by these Judicial Branch rules, not a public-records request.
The Maine guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.
Frequently asked questions
Can I search Knox County court cases online?
Not yet. Knox County is in eCourts Region 6, scheduled to convert to Maine eCourts and re:SearchMaine on December 7, 2026. Until then, contact the Superior Court or Rockland District Court clerk at 62 Union Street by phone or in person.
Are the Knox County Superior Court, District Court, and Probate Court all in one building?
Yes. All three are at the county courthouse, 62 Union Street, Rockland. The Superior and District Courts share a clerk with separate phone lines; the Registry of Probate is a separate county office on the first floor.
How far back do Knox County probate records go?
To 1860. Knox County was formed from parts of Waldo and Lincoln counties, so estate files from before that year are in those counties' probate records, not Knox's.
When does the Knox County Probate Court hold hearings?
The first and third Wednesday of each month, and as needed. The Registry of Probate office itself is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays.
