Aroostook County is Maine's largest county by land area and the only one whose Superior Court sits in two places. The Aroostook County Superior Court holds felony criminal, civil, and family cases at both the Caribou courthouse on Sweden Street and the Houlton courthouse on Court Street, and which building has a given file depends on where in the county the case was filed. Four District Courts — Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton, and Fort Kent — handle misdemeanors, small claims, protection orders, Family Division matters, and traffic infractions for their surrounding towns. (The former Madawaska District Court is permanently closed; its cases were moved to Fort Kent and Caribou.)

Aroostook is the Judicial Branch's eCourts Region 8, and it converted to electronic filing and the free public re:SearchMaine portal on June 1, 2026 for all case types. That means the Registry of Actions for criminal, civil, family, juvenile, and civil-violation cases filed in any Aroostook courthouse since that date is searchable online after a free registration, and eFiling is mandatory for attorneys, government agencies, and anyone filing more than six cases a year. Cases that were already closed before the conversion generally remain paper files at the courthouse.

As in every Maine county, probate is a separate matter. Wills, estates, guardianships, adoptions, and name changes are kept by the elected Aroostook County Register of Probate, a county office rather than a Judicial Branch court, and they never appear in re:SearchMaine. This guide could not confirm the Register's current address, phone, or website from an official page, so contact Aroostook County government directly for probate records rather than the Superior Court clerk.

What is available online

Aroostook County (eCourts Region 8) went live on Maine eCourts on June 1, 2026 for all case types, so the Registry of Actions for criminal, civil, family, juvenile, and civil-violation cases filed in any of the county's six courthouses since then is searchable for free on re:SearchMaine after registration. Cases closed before June 2026 were not converted and remain paper files at the courthouse where they were heard. Documents beyond the Registry of Actions generally have to be viewed at a courthouse public terminal. Probate records are not part of re:SearchMaine at all; the Aroostook Register of Probate is a separate county office whose online presence this guide could not verify.

Which clerk has your record

In Maine, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Maine page.

Superior Court and District Court records. Register for a free re:SearchMaine account to look up the Registry of Actions for cases filed since June 1, 2026. For older or closed cases, or for copies of filed documents, contact the clerk's office at the courthouse where the case was heard — Caribou (144 Sweden Street) or Houlton (26 Court Street) for Superior Court matters, or the Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton, or Fort Kent District Court for misdemeanors, small claims, and Family Division cases. Because Aroostook's Superior Court sits in two towns, call first to confirm which building has the file. Mail requests for copies go to the Judicial Branch Service Center, P.O. Box 266, Lewiston, ME 04240 (207-753-2901); include the case number or party names and year, the documents needed, whether you want an attested (certified) copy, and payment under the statewide fee schedule ($2 first page, $1 each additional page, plus $5 to attest a document).

Probate records. Contact the Aroostook County Register of Probate through Aroostook County government. Probate is a separate elected county office, so the Superior Court clerks cannot look up estate, guardianship, or adoption files. Adoption records are confidential.

Fees

ItemTypical cost in Maine
Plain copy$2.00 for the first page, $1.00 for each additional page (Superior and District Court)
Certified copy$5.00 attestation fee per document, in addition to the copy fee (Superior and District Court)

Set statewide by Supreme Judicial Court Administrative Order JB-05-26 (effective March 9, 2026) for Superior and District Court records. Probate Courts are exempt from that statewide fee schedule and set their own copy and certification fees; confirm the current amount with the specific county's Register of Probate before sending payment.

Sealed and restricted records

Maine court records are generally open, but the Judicial Branch's Rules of Electronic Court Systems (MRECS) and Administrative Order JB-20-03 (Public Access and Confidentiality) draw a distinction between "public court information," "confidential" information restricted to parties or courthouse viewing, and records that are fully sealed or impounded by statute, rule, or court order. Maine's Freedom of Access Act does not apply to the judiciary — court records are governed by these Judicial Branch rules, not a public-records request.

The Maine guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Aroostook County have two Superior Court locations?

Because of the county's size. Aroostook County Superior Court sits in both Caribou and Houlton, and a felony, civil, or family file is kept at whichever courthouse the case was filed in. Call the clerk to confirm which building has the record before visiting.

Can I search Aroostook County court cases online?

Yes for cases filed since June 1, 2026, when Aroostook (eCourts Region 8) went live on Maine eCourts. Register for free at re:SearchMaine to see the Registry of Actions. Earlier cases were not converted and must be requested from the clerk.

What happened to Madawaska District Court cases?

Madawaska District Court is permanently closed. Cases from the St. John Valley are now heard at Fort Kent District Court, 139 Market Street, and some were transferred to Caribou; contact those clerks for the file.

Where are Aroostook County probate records, such as a will or an estate?

With the Aroostook County Register of Probate, a separate elected county office that is not part of the Judicial Branch or re:SearchMaine. This guide could not confirm the office's current contact details from an official page, so reach it through Aroostook County government.
