Litchfield County has no county government and no county clerk. Its towns fall within a single Superior Court judicial district: the Litchfield Judicial District, with its courthouse in Torrington (the town of Litchfield itself is the historic county seat, but the modern courthouse has long been in Torrington). The district serves Barkhamsted, Bethlehem, Bridgewater, Canaan, Colebrook, Cornwall, Goshen, Hartland, Harwinton, Kent, Litchfield, Morris, New Hartford, New Milford, Norfolk, North Canaan, Roxbury, Salisbury, Sharon, Thomaston, Torrington, Warren, Washington, and Winchester, plus, since October 1, 2025, six towns transferred in from other judicial districts under Public Act 25-91: Avon, Burlington, Canton, Farmington, Granby, and Simsbury.

Because the Litchfield Judicial District now includes towns that are not geographically part of Litchfield County (the six towns added in 2025 are in Hartford County), searchers should not assume every case at the Torrington courthouse involves a Litchfield County town, and conversely every Litchfield County town's Superior Court cases are handled here regardless of size.

As everywhere in Connecticut, wills, estates, and guardianship matters are not Superior Court business; they belong to the local Probate Court for the person's town, and Litchfield County's towns are divided among several probate districts. Case records for the Litchfield Judicial District are searched through the same statewide Judicial Branch Case Look-up tools used across Connecticut, not a county-specific portal.

What is available online

The statewide Case Look-up tools show docket entries, party names, and case status for civil, family, criminal, motor-vehicle, housing, and small-claims cases filed in the Litchfield Judicial District, but do not show document images. Criminal conviction information generally disappears from the public criminal look-up after 10 years or on erasure under the Clean Slate law. A case involving one of the Farmington Valley towns added to the district in October 2025 may have started out in a different judicial district before the transfer, so older files from those towns may still be with the prior district. Probate filings are on a separate system; the statewide Probate Court Case Lookup Tool covers only decedent's estate and trust matters from 2011 forward.

Which clerk has your record

In Connecticut, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Connecticut page.

Superior Court records. Contact the Litchfield Judicial District clerk's office at the Torrington courthouse with the docket number, or the party names and approximate year if you do not have one. Copies are billed per the statutory fee schedule in Conn. Gen. Stat. § 52-259, with certified copies costing more than plain copies.

G.A. court records. Lower-level criminal and motor-vehicle cases from Litchfield County towns may be at G.A. 18, also at 50 Field Street in Torrington, rather than a separate address.

Probate records. Contact the specific probate district for the town, found through the Probate Court's district locator; each district keeps its own estate, guardianship, and adoption files independently of the Superior Court.

Farmington Valley towns. For a case from Avon, Burlington, Canton, Farmington, Granby, or Simsbury, check whether it was filed before or after October 1, 2025. Older cases from those towns may still be on file with their previous judicial district rather than Litchfield.

Sealed and restricted records

Connecticut court records are presumed open, but a substantial share of what people search for is restricted by rule or statute:

The Connecticut guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Litchfield County clerk's office?

No. Connecticut has no county government, so there is no Litchfield County clerk. The Litchfield Judicial District's Superior Court clerk's office in Torrington keeps the trial-court files for the whole county.

Why is the Litchfield Judicial District courthouse in Torrington rather than Litchfield?

Litchfield is the historic county seat, but the modern Superior Court courthouse has long been located in Torrington, the county's largest town. The judicial district kept the name Litchfield even though the courthouse itself is in Torrington.

Do towns outside Litchfield County use the Litchfield Judicial District?

Yes, as of October 1, 2025. Public Act 25-91 moved Avon, Burlington, Canton, Farmington, Granby, and Simsbury, which are Hartford County towns geographically, into the Litchfield Judicial District for Superior Court purposes.

Can I search Litchfield County court cases online for free?

Yes. The Judicial Branch's statewide Case Look-up tools cover civil, family, criminal, motor-vehicle, housing, and small-claims cases from the Litchfield Judicial District at no charge, showing docket entries and case status rather than document images.

Where do I find a will or estate record for someone from Litchfield County?

Look up the correct Probate Court district for that person's town using the Probate Court's district locator, not the Superior Court. Litchfield County's towns are divided among several probate districts.
