Hartford County has no county government and no county clerk. Most of its towns are covered by two Superior Court judicial districts. The Hartford Judicial District serves Bloomfield, East Granby, East Hartford, East Windsor, Enfield, Glastonbury, Hartford, Manchester, Marlborough, South Windsor, Suffield, West Hartford, Windsor, and Windsor Locks. The New Britain Judicial District serves Berlin, Bristol, New Britain, Newington, Plainville, Plymouth, Rocky Hill, Southington, and Wethersfield.

A handful of Hartford County's northwestern towns were moved out of their previous judicial districts into the Litchfield Judicial District by Public Act 25-91, effective October 1, 2025: Avon, Burlington, Canton, Farmington, Granby, and Simsbury. Anyone searching for a case from one of those six towns filed on or after that date should check the Litchfield Judicial District's clerk rather than Hartford or New Britain.

As with the rest of Connecticut, wills, estates, and guardianship matters are handled by local Probate Courts, not the Superior Court, and Hartford County's towns are split among multiple probate districts. All Superior Court case types are searched through the same statewide Judicial Branch Case Look-up tools rather than a Hartford County-specific site.

What is available online

The statewide Case Look-up tools show docket entries, party names, and case status for civil, family, criminal, motor-vehicle, housing, and small-claims cases filed in the Hartford, New Britain, or (for the six transferred towns) Litchfield judicial districts, but do not show document images. Criminal conviction information generally disappears from the public criminal look-up after 10 years or on erasure under the Clean Slate law. Probate filings are on a separate system entirely.

Which clerk has your record

In Connecticut, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Connecticut page.

Phone: Hartford J.D. Chief Clerk's Office: (860) 548-2700

Superior Court records. Identify which judicial district covers the town where the case was filed: Hartford for most of the county's core towns, New Britain for the New Britain-area towns, or (for cases filed on or after October 1, 2025) Litchfield for Avon, Burlington, Canton, Farmington, Granby, and Simsbury. Contact that district's clerk's office with the docket number, or the party names and approximate year if you do not have one. Copies are billed per the statutory fee schedule in Conn. Gen. Stat. § 52-259.

G.A. court records. Lower-level criminal and motor-vehicle cases may be at a geographical area courthouse, such as G.A. 14 in Hartford, G.A. 15 in New Britain, or G.A. 12 in Manchester, rather than the judicial-district courthouse.

Probate records. Contact the specific probate district for the town, found through the Probate Court's district locator; each district keeps its own estate, guardianship, and adoption files.

Sealed and restricted records

Connecticut court records are presumed open, but a substantial share of what people search for is restricted by rule or statute:

The Connecticut guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Hartford County clerk's office?

No. Connecticut has no county government, so there is no Hartford County clerk. The Hartford and New Britain Superior Court judicial districts, and, for a few towns, the Litchfield Judicial District, each keep their own case files instead.

Which judicial district covers my Hartford County town?

Most of the county's larger towns, including Hartford, East Hartford, West Hartford, Manchester, Glastonbury, and Windsor, are in the Hartford Judicial District. Berlin, Bristol, New Britain, Newington, Plainville, Plymouth, Rocky Hill, Southington, and Wethersfield are in the New Britain Judicial District. Avon, Burlington, Canton, Farmington, Granby, and Simsbury moved to the Litchfield Judicial District on October 1, 2025.

Why did some Hartford County towns move to the Litchfield Judicial District?

Public Act 25-91 reassigned Avon, Burlington, Canton, Farmington, Granby, and Simsbury to the Litchfield Judicial District effective October 1, 2025. The towns are still in Hartford County geographically; only which court handles their Superior Court cases changed.

Can I search Hartford County Superior Court cases online for free?

Yes. The Judicial Branch's statewide Case Look-up tools cover civil, family, criminal, motor-vehicle, housing, and small-claims cases from any Connecticut judicial district at no charge, though they show docket entries rather than document images.

Where are Hartford County probate records kept?

At the local Probate Court district for the person's town, not the Superior Court. Use the Probate Court's district locator to find the right office; Hartford County's towns are divided among several probate districts.
