Fairfield County has no county government and no county clerk. Its towns are split across three Superior Court judicial districts, each with its own clerk's office. The Bridgeport Judicial District (renamed from the Fairfield Judicial District in 2024, though the courthouse has always been in Bridgeport) serves Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford, and Trumbull. The Stamford-Norwalk Judicial District serves Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford, Weston, Westport, and Wilton. The Danbury Judicial District serves Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield, and Sherman.

Whichever judicial district covers the town where a case was filed keeps that case's file. Felony, divorce, custody, and larger civil cases are docketed at the judicial-district courthouse; misdemeanors, motor-vehicle cases, and smaller civil matters are handled at the geographical area (G.A.) courts within each district (for example G.A. 2 in Bridgeport, G.A. 1 in Stamford, and G.A. 20 in Norwalk). Wills, estates, and guardianship matters are not at any Superior Court at all; they are at the local Probate Court for the decedent's or ward's town, and Fairfield County's towns are divided among several probate districts.

All three judicial districts are searched through the same statewide Judicial Branch Case Look-up tools, not a Fairfield County-specific website, so pick the correct case type (civil/family, criminal, housing, or small claims) before searching by name or docket number.

What is available online

The statewide Case Look-up tools show docket entries, party names, and case status for civil, family, criminal, motor-vehicle, housing, and small-claims cases filed in any of Fairfield County's three judicial districts, but they do not show document images. Criminal conviction information generally disappears from the public criminal look-up after 10 years or on erasure under the Clean Slate law. Probate filings are on a completely separate system; the Probate Court Case Lookup Tool covers only decedent's estate and trust matters from 2011 forward.

Which clerk has your record

In Connecticut, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Connecticut page.

Superior Court records. Identify which of the three judicial districts covers the town where the case was filed (Bridgeport, Stamford-Norwalk, or Danbury), then contact that district's clerk's office. Bring or mail the docket number if you have it, or the party names and approximate year. Copies are billed per the statutory fee schedule in Conn. Gen. Stat. § 52-259, and certified copies cost more than plain copies.

G.A. court records. For a lower-level criminal or motor-vehicle case, the file may be at a G.A. courthouse (Bridgeport G.A. 2, Stamford G.A. 1, Norwalk G.A. 20, or Danbury G.A. 3) rather than the judicial-district courthouse. The Judicial Branch's court-location directory shows which G.A. serves which town.

Probate records. Contact the specific probate district for the town, found through the Probate Court's district locator; each district keeps its own estate, guardianship, and adoption files independently of the Superior Court.

Sealed and restricted records

Connecticut court records are presumed open, but a substantial share of what people search for is restricted by rule or statute:

The Connecticut guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Fairfield County clerk's office?

There isn't one. Connecticut has no county government, so there is no Fairfield County clerk. The three Superior Court judicial districts covering the county, Bridgeport, Stamford-Norwalk, and Danbury, each have their own clerk's office instead.

Which judicial district covers my town in Fairfield County?

Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford, and Trumbull are in the Bridgeport Judicial District. Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford, Weston, Westport, and Wilton are in the Stamford-Norwalk Judicial District. Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield, and Sherman are in the Danbury Judicial District.

Can I search Fairfield County court cases online for free?

Yes. The Judicial Branch's statewide Case Look-up tools cover civil, family, criminal, motor-vehicle, housing, and small-claims cases from all three judicial districts at no cost, though they show docket information rather than document images.

Where do I find a will or estate file for someone who lived in Fairfield County?

Look up the correct Probate Court district for that person's town using the Probate Court's district locator, not the Superior Court. Fairfield County's towns are divided among several probate districts.

Is Bridgeport still called the Fairfield Judicial District?

No. The Judicial Branch renamed it the Bridgeport Judicial District effective January 1, 2024, to match the courthouse's actual location; the towns it serves did not change.
