The North Slope Borough is the largest county-equivalent in the United States by area, stretching across the entire Arctic coast of Alaska from the Chukchi Sea to the Canadian border. Its seat, Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow), is the northernmost community in the country. The borough government is unusually large and well funded because of oil-property taxes, but, like every Alaska borough, it does not run a court. Case records are kept by the clerk's office of the Alaska Court System's Second Judicial District at the Utqiaġvik courthouse on Agvik Street.
Utqiaġvik carries more judicial weight than its population suggests. The court's judges directory lists a Superior Court judge and a magistrate judge based there, and the presiding judge of the Second Judicial District sits in Utqiaġvik, making it the administrative headquarters for the district that also covers Nome and Kotzebue. Felony cases, civil suits, divorces, custody, guardianships, and probate from the borough's eight villages are filed and kept locally; misdemeanors, small claims, protective orders, and minor offenses are handled by the magistrate.
Distances on the Slope are extreme, and none of the villages are connected by road. The court requires agencies and attorneys to file through the TrueFiling e-filing system and encourages self-represented filers to do the same, with protective orders, child-protection, probate, and delinquency filings accepted at a court email mailbox. For records, the same logic applies: CourtView plus a mailed or emailed request is the normal path, and a trip to Agvik Street is rarely required.

What is available online
CourtView covers Utqiaġvik Superior and District Court cases in the same statewide search as every other Alaska courthouse, with no comprehensive coverage before 1990. Because the borough was organized in 1972 and the courthouse's older files date from the Barrow era, records from before 1990 exist on paper or microfilm and require a written request with a research fee if the case number is unknown. Confidential case types, including Child in Need of Aid and guardianship matters, never appear online.
Which clerk has your record
In Alaska, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Alaska page.

Fees
| Item | Typical cost in Alaska |
|---|---|
| Plain copy | $5 for the first page, $3 for each additional page |
| Certified copy | $10 for the first page, $3 for each additional page |
Fees are set statewide by Administrative Rule 9 (the court system's fee schedule) and apply at every courthouse, unlike states where each county sets its own copy fee. Confirm with the clerk's office before sending payment, since the schedule is amended from time to time by supreme court order.

Sealed and restricted records
Alaska does not have a general expungement statute that erases a conviction from every record. Instead, it uses two narrower tools:
The Alaska guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.
Frequently asked questions
Does the North Slope Borough keep court records?
No. Despite having one of the largest borough governments in Alaska, the North Slope Borough does not run a court. Records are kept by the Alaska Court System's Second Judicial District clerk's office at the Utqiaġvik courthouse, a state office.
Is Utqiaġvik a full Superior Court location?
Yes. The court's judges directory lists a Superior Court judge and a magistrate judge based in Utqiaġvik, and the presiding judge of the Second Judicial District sits there, so felony, family, and probate cases from the borough are filed and kept locally.
Are records for Barrow-era cases filed under Barrow or Utqiaġvik?
The city changed its name to Utqiaġvik in 2016, but the courthouse and its files did not move. Search CourtView by party name or case number rather than by city, and send paper requests to Box 270, Utqiaġvik, AK 99723.
What are the Utqiaġvik clerk's office hours?
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the clerk's office closed Tuesdays from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. for internal processing.
