The Nome Census Area covers the Seward Peninsula and St. Lawrence Island, a region of about fifteen villages with the gold-rush city of Nome as its hub. It is a Census Bureau statistical area inside Alaska's unorganized borough, not a borough, so there is no borough government and no borough clerk. Court records for the whole region are held by the clerk's office of the Alaska Court System's Second Judicial District at the Nome courthouse on West 5th Avenue.

Nome's courthouse is one of the oldest continuously operating court locations in Alaska, dating to the territorial court that followed the 1899 gold strike. Today the court's judges directory lists a magistrate judge based in Nome, so the region's felony, family, and probate matters are heard by Superior Court judges of the Second Judicial District, whose presiding judge sits in Utqiaġvik. Whichever judge hears a case, the file is opened and kept by the Nome clerk's office, and criminal, civil, small claims, probate, and family cases are all filed there.

Because none of the region's villages are connected by road, the court operates largely by phone and e-filing. Criminal, civil, and small claims filings go through the TrueFiling system or the court's email mailbox, in-custody arraignments are scheduled daily, and the courthouse hosts toll-free lines for the state law library and the Family Law Self-Help Center. For records, CourtView plus a mailed or emailed request is the normal path.

What is available online

CourtView covers Nome Superior and District Court cases in the same statewide search as every other Alaska courthouse, with no comprehensive coverage before 1990. Nome's court history runs back more than a century, and gold-rush-era and mid-century files are archival paper records that require a written request and, without a case number, a research fee. Confidential case types, including Child in Need of Aid, adoption, and guardianship matters, never appear online.

Which clerk has your record

In Alaska, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Alaska page.

Fees

ItemTypical cost in Alaska
Plain copy$5 for the first page, $3 for each additional page
Certified copy$10 for the first page, $3 for each additional page

Fees are set statewide by Administrative Rule 9 (the court system's fee schedule) and apply at every courthouse, unlike states where each county sets its own copy fee. Confirm with the clerk's office before sending payment, since the schedule is amended from time to time by supreme court order.

Sealed and restricted records

Alaska does not have a general expungement statute that erases a conviction from every record. Instead, it uses two narrower tools:

The Alaska guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.
