Juneau is unusual even by Alaska standards: it is a "City and Borough," a single consolidated government that is both the state capital's city and its own borough-equivalent, with no other municipality inside it. As with every Alaska borough, that local government does not run a court. Cases filed in Juneau are handled by the clerk's office of the Alaska Court System's First Judicial District, headquartered downtown a few blocks from the state capitol.

Because Juneau is the seat of state government, its courthouse also has more of a public-facing role than most — the Alaska Supreme Court holds sessions there several times a year in addition to its regular Superior and District Court docket. Case records for all of them are searchable the same way as anywhere else in the state: CourtView for trial-court cases, and the separate appellate case search for Supreme Court and Court of Appeals matters.

What is available online

CourtView covers Juneau Superior and District Court cases in the same statewide search as every other Alaska courthouse, with no comprehensive coverage before 1990. Supreme Court and Court of Appeals matters argued in Juneau are indexed in the separate statewide appellate case search rather than CourtView.

Which clerk has your record

In Alaska, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Alaska page.

Fees

ItemTypical cost in Alaska
Plain copy$5 for the first page, $3 for each additional page
Certified copy$10 for the first page, $3 for each additional page

Fees are set statewide by Administrative Rule 9 (the court system's fee schedule) and apply at every courthouse, unlike states where each county sets its own copy fee. Confirm with the clerk's office before sending payment, since the schedule is amended from time to time by supreme court order.

Sealed and restricted records

Alaska does not have a general expungement statute that erases a conviction from every record. Instead, it uses two narrower tools:

The Alaska guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.

Frequently asked questions

Does the City and Borough of Juneau operate its own court?

No. Even though Juneau's city and borough government are combined into one entity, court records are still kept entirely by the Alaska Court System's First Judicial District clerk's office, a state agency, not a municipal one.

Are Alaska Supreme Court cases argued in Juneau searchable on CourtView?

No. CourtView covers Superior and District Court trial cases. Supreme Court and Court of Appeals cases, including those argued during the court's Juneau sessions, are in the separate statewide appellate case search.

Where do I mail a records request for a Juneau court case?

To the clerk's office at Box 114100, Juneau, AK 99811, or deliver it in person at 123 4th Street. Include the case number, the documents needed, and payment.

What are the clerk's office hours in Juneau?

Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the clerk's office closed Thursdays from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. for internal processing.
