Washington County, home to the state capital Montpelier, splits its Superior Court unit between two towns. The Civil Division and Probate Division sit at 65 State Street in Montpelier, while the Criminal Division and Family Division are a few miles away at 255 North Main Street in Barre. As elsewhere in Vermont, there is no countywide "county clerk" for court records — each division has its own Court Operations Manager, and probate additionally has a separate Clerk of Court and Probate Register.

The Civil Division is the only division whose case records the public can search online, through the Vermont Judiciary Public Portal. Criminal, family, and probate case information is confidential from the public online under 12 V.S.A. § 5, so requests for those records go through the specific division by phone, email, or an in-person visit to Barre or Montpelier depending on the case type.

Washington County includes Montpelier, Barre, and towns such as Waterbury and Northfield. All four divisions close the fourth Wednesday of each month from 8:00 a.m. to noon for staff training, in addition to standard state holidays.

What is available online

The Vermont Judiciary Public Portal shows Civil Division docket entries and calendars for Washington County. Criminal, family, and probate cases are not shown to the public online under 12 V.S.A. § 5. Registered Vermont attorneys get broader online access to nonconfidential records in those divisions through the same portal. Note that Civil/Probate sit in Montpelier while Criminal/Family sit in Barre — confirm the address before visiting in person.

Which clerk has your record

In Vermont, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Vermont page.

Sealed and restricted records

Vermont limits public access to court records in two separate ways: by statute, entire categories of case records are simply never posted online, and separately, individual records can be sealed or expunged by court order.

The Vermont guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.
