Madison County, home to Rexburg and the Brigham Young University–Idaho campus, is one of the ten counties in Idaho's 7th Judicial District, which is administered from Idaho Falls. Its population is young and turns over quickly with the academic calendar, which shows up in the court docket as a steady volume of traffic infractions, small-claims disputes, and landlord–tenant cases in the magistrate division. As in every Idaho county, the Madison County Clerk serves ex officio as Clerk of the District Court and is the custodian of the file for both the district court and the magistrate division.

Court records are kept at the Madison County Courthouse, 159 East Main Street, Rexburg. The court clerk's staff publish their own Court Records Request Form, which spells out the fee ($1.00 per page and $1.00 per certification), the response time (three working days to acknowledge, up to ten to locate a file), and the delivery choices — mail, e-mail, or pick-up. A separate general public-records form covers non-court county records and should not be used for case files.

Case information for Madison County is searchable for free through the statewide iCourt Portal, and the Idaho Court Assistance Office keeps a self-help desk in the courthouse for people filing without a lawyer. Third-party "Madison County court records" websites are not official and cannot issue certified copies.

What is available online

The iCourt Portal indexes Madison County district and magistrate cases and shows the register of actions for most cases entered into the statewide case management system. Document images are not consistently available online. Copies and certified copies come from the court clerk through the Court Records Request Form, which can be returned by e-mail or fax as well as in person, and the clerk will send the copies by mail or e-mail on request. A direct court-clerk phone line and public-counter hours were not published on the county's courts page at the time of this review; call the county main line to be transferred.

Which clerk has your record

In Idaho, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Idaho page.

Fees

ItemTypical cost in Idaho
Plain copy$1.00 per page
Certified copy$1.00 per page, plus $1.00 per document for the clerk's certificate and seal

Idaho Code § 31-3201 sets the clerk of the district court's fee for making a copy of any file or record at $1.00 per page (and $0.50 per page for comparing and conforming a copy you prepare yourself). The statute lists a separate certificate-and-seal charge for certifying a copy without printing a fixed amount in the online text; the court records request forms published by Bonneville, Bingham, and Madison counties all state that charge as $1.00 per document. Some counties add a flat request or card-processing fee (Canyon County charges $5 per request), so confirm the total with the clerk before sending payment.
