Montgomery County — home to Clarksville and the Tennessee side of Fort Campbell — sits in the 19th Judicial District with Robertson County. Its trial-court records are split between two offices that share the Montgomery County Courts Center at 2 Millennium Plaza in downtown Clarksville. The elected Circuit Court Clerk (Suite 115) keeps Circuit Court civil and criminal files and also serves as clerk of the General Sessions and Juvenile Courts, running seven divisions: Administration, Civil, Criminal, Traffic, Records/Archives, Juvenile, and Jury Administration. The appointed Clerk and Master (Suite 101) keeps Chancery Court files, including probate, estates, and delinquent-tax suits.

Montgomery County stands out among mid-sized Tennessee counties for online access. The Circuit Court Clerk offers a web inquiry service covering civil, criminal, and traffic cases — criminal and traffic records from November 1, 1999 forward and civil records from May 1, 2006 forward — and has chosen to make it free rather than charging the subscription fee some Tennessee clerks collect. The clerk publishes a shared public login on its Online Court Records page so anyone can view full case details.

What the online system does not include is Chancery Court. For probate, estate, and other Clerk and Master files you will work with the Clerk and Master's office directly, which posts its dockets and a current fee sheet online but not a case search.

What is available online

The Circuit Court Clerk's web inquiry service, hosted at montgomery.tncrtinfo.com, covers Circuit and General Sessions civil, criminal, and traffic cases. Criminal and traffic records begin November 1, 1999; civil records begin May 1, 2006. Older cases exist only in the clerk's Records/Archives division. Access is free: the clerk pays the vendor's subscription and publishes a public username and password on its Online Court Records page, so you must log in with those credentials to see full case detail. Court dockets and upcoming court dates are posted as files on the clerk's site. Chancery Court (Clerk and Master) cases are not searchable online; the Clerk and Master posts dockets and chancellor calendars only. Juvenile records are confidential and excluded.

Which clerk has your record

In Tennessee, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Tennessee page.

Clerk fees are set by Tenn. Code Ann. Title 8, Chapter 21, Part 4 (the general schedule, including a per-page copy fee and a certification fee) and Part 5 for appellate clerk fees. Tenn. Code Ann. § 8-21-409 sets a separate, often higher, fee schedule for clerks in Tennessee's charter-government counties, which is why offices in Shelby and Davidson can charge different amounts than smaller counties. Confirm the current per-page and certification fee with the specific clerk before sending payment.

Sealed and restricted records

Tennessee court records are presumed open under Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 34 (Public Access to Court Records), which sets the general presumption of access and lists the categories courts must treat as confidential.

The Tennessee guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.
