Missoula County, home to the university city of Missoula, is the seat of the Fourth Judicial District. The Clerk of District Court, based on the second floor of the Missoula County Courthouse, keeps felony, civil, family, probate, and involuntary-commitment files and issues marriage licenses — more than 5,000 new district-court cases a year. The Missoula Self-Help Law Center, in the same courthouse, gives self-represented parties forms and information (not legal advice) for civil district-court matters.

Misdemeanors, small claims, evictions, and county-level traffic tickets go instead to the Missoula County Justice Court, which runs its own separate online case-search tool. Tickets and ordinance violations written inside the City of Missoula go to the Missoula Municipal Court, a city office not covered by either county system.

Whether a district-court case is searchable online depends on whether the Fourth Judicial District has been migrated to Montana's statewide case management system; check the statewide District Court Public Access Portal before assuming a case doesn't exist.

What is available online

The Clerk of District Court's own page does not list a public case-search database; it points readers to the courthouse and the Self-Help Law Center for civil matters. The Justice Court, by contrast, runs its own searchable web tool covering misdemeanor, small-claims, eviction, and traffic cases. Whether Fourth Judicial District cases are also on the statewide District Court Public Access Portal depends on that court's conversion status; check the portal before assuming a case must be requested in person.

Which clerk has your record

In Montana, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Montana page.
