Maui County is the state Judiciary's Second Circuit, and it covers more than one island: Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. The circuit's main administrative offices are at Hoapili Hale in Wailuku, but district courts also sit on Lanai and Molokai, and Lahaina and Hana have their own district court contact points, so where a case was filed on Maui can matter for finding it.

As with every Hawaii county, Maui County's own government keeps no court records; the state Judiciary's Second Circuit Court, District Court, and Family Court hold every case file for the county, and the statewide eCourt Kōkua system searches them the same way it searches Oahu, Hawaii, and Kauai cases.

Because the circuit spans three islands with different-sized courthouses, mail requests for Lanai or Molokai cases should still go to the Second Circuit's Legal Documents Branch in Wailuku unless a specific branch address is given for that island's court.

What is available online

eCourt Kokua covers non-confidential Second Circuit Court, District Court, and Family Court dockets from Maui, Molokai, and Lanai courthouses alike. Documents marked with a PDF icon can be purchased online. Family cases involving minors, adoption, and many domestic-violence matters are confidential and excluded from public search regardless of the island where they were filed.

Which clerk has your record

In Hawaii, the clerk who keeps a file depends on which court heard the case. Check the court name on the case notice, citation, or order, then use the office and coverage details above to identify the record holder. Court names and responsibilities differ by state; a county clerk may not keep court case files. For federal cases, see the PACER guide. The full court structure is on the Hawaii page.

Circuit, District, and Family Court records. Contact the Second Circuit's Legal Documents Branch at Hoapili Hale, 2145 Main Street, Suite 106, Wailuku, or mail the Neighbor Island Request Form (2DP332) there. For a case that was heard specifically on Lanai or Molokai, note the island district court in the request so it can be routed correctly. Do not send payment with the form; the branch invoices copying and handling fees, payable by money order or certified/cashier's check, before sending copies.

Sealed and restricted records

Hawaii's Hawaii Court Records Rules (HCRR), adopted by the Supreme Court, govern which case information the Legal Documents Branch can show the public. Rule 9 covers how confidential personal information must be filed separately, and Rule 10.4 governs access to documents that a court has sealed or restricted. The clerks of each court are required to give public access to non-confidential dockets and documents through courthouse public-access terminals, but must restrict confidential, sealed, or restricted records to the parties and their attorneys.

The Hawaii guide lists every category of sealed and restricted record, and our guide to expunging or sealing a criminal record explains how to remove one from public view.

Frequently asked questions

Does Maui County government keep court records?

No. Maui County government runs police and county services, but all Circuit, District, and Family Court records for Maui, Molokai, and Lanai are kept by the state Judiciary's Second Circuit courts.

Are Molokai and Lanai cases in the same system as Maui cases?

Yes. Molokai and Lanai each have their own district courthouse, but both are part of the Second Circuit and are searchable through the same eCourt Kokua system as Maui island cases.

Where do I send a records request for a Lahaina or Hana case?

Send it to the Second Circuit's Legal Documents Branch at Hoapili Hale in Wailuku, noting which district court (Lahaina or Hana) heard the case, since those courthouses share a phone line and are administered from Wailuku.

Can I search Second Circuit cases online?

Yes, through eCourt Kokua, the same statewide system used for every Hawaii circuit. It is free to search; confidential family, juvenile, and adoption cases will not appear.
